Sweet Sauternes

Find pineapple, peaches, flowers, pears, apricots, nectarines, orange, vanilla, custard, butterscotch, coconut, and honey in the wines of Sauternes.

This beautiful wine region produces sweet wines using a truly unique method. Enjoy the views from the top of the hill at Chateau d’Yquem and indulge in Sauternes paired with salty cheeses, spicy foods, and foie gras.
The Sauternes region is located 40 km (25 mi) southeast of the city of Bordeaux along the Garonne river and its tributary, the Ciron.

What to Expect During Winery Visits

Each winery tour lasts about 1 to 1.5 hours. Typically, it includes a guided stroll through vineyard, a tour of the cellars followed by a tasting of 2-3 wines.

Winery visits can be private or public. Private tours give you more attention of the guide or owner and more time to ask questions. As well, you can be flexible with various tasting options, such as include famous vintages, or wine and food pairing in your tasting.

Please note that winery visits and tastings are own expense and are paid per person directly to the chateaux. Typical winery fees are 12 to 45 euros per person per chateau. Private tours can be slightly more expensive. Please let me know if you prefer private visits or want to upgrade your tasting.

Most wineries sell wines at their boutiques and many would ship wines to your country. You can make a stop at a local wine shop. Read more in the Frequently Asked Questions section.
